Leo Messi made a lot of US players look bad tonight, including Steve Birnbaum

An uncharacteristic mistake from the D.C. United center back contributed to a goal in the USMNT’s heavy loss in the Copa America tonight.

To night’s Copa America Centenario semifinal between the United States andArgentina did not go well for the USMNT, who lost 4-0 in Houston. However, one D.C. United player did at least get to play a part, as center back Steve Birnbaum got into the game for the final half-hour. Birnbaum came in for Kyle Beckerman in the 60th minute, with Geoff Cameron moving into Beckerman’s midfield role and Birnbaum playing his normal spot in central defense.
Birnbaum completed a pass under little pressure within a minute of entering, but the game came to a long stop moments later after Ezequiel Lavezzi – trying to keep a ball in bounds on the touchline – backed into the advertising boards and fell over them. It was not a good looking moment in the aftermath, with Lavezzi’s elbow a particular concern.Erik Lamela eventually came in on the left after a 3+ minute delay.
Birnbaum’s next touch came in the 71st minute, and with the US trying to stay forward, he had few options nearby. Birnbaum tried a 60 yard pass up toward Christian Pulisic along the right wing, but it sailed about a yard too far (and even if it had stayed in, Pulisic would have needed a glorious touch to control it under pressure from Marcos Rojo). He had a few more touches five minutes later, but after an exchange with Bradley he passed back to Brad Guzan, who hoofed the ball upfield.
A minute after that, he did just enough to lean on Lionel Messi so that the world’s best player couldn’t get to a ball in the US end. Messi got the better of Birnbaum moments later, though, fooling him and Bradley into both stepping to him before passing immediately after both US players leaned toward him. Lamela raced in with space, but fired into the outside netting.
Unfortunately, Birnbaum did himself no favors in the 86th minute. A spell of token pressure from Argentina still managed to put the US in a bad spot, as again no one made themselves available for the ball. Bradley found himself boxed in and played a strange pass about 7 yards ahead of Birnbaum (who was expecting either a pass to John Brooks or a pass to feet). Birnbaum still had time to get to the ball, but under pressure from the suddenly sprinting Javier Mascherano, he got caught in two minds.
Birnbaum appeared to think he could step over the ball and turn back to pass to Guzan. It’s not the kind of thing Birnbaum would normally do, even in the confines of an MLS match with a less dangerous player lurking. Perhaps he was caught off-guard by the pass and froze up. Perhaps Messi pulled some kind of Jedi mind trick on him («No, Steve, I’m 15 yards away»). In any case, Messi was close enough to jump in and take the ball before Birnbaum completed his maneuver. Messi charged into the box with Gonzalo Higuain, with Brooks the only man back. Messi drew Brooks before slotting over to Higuain, who fired past Guzan before Birnbaum could arrive to correct his error. The only good news is that, at this point, the game was long over. People will remember this mistake, but it’s not exactly Chris Wondolowski vs. Belgium.
That fourth goal effectively ended the game, as neither team really did much of anything beyond waiting for the referee to end the match. It was unfortunate for Birnbaum, who is pushing for a solid spot within the USMNT squad at a position where there are some good candidates. Omar Gonzalez had a very good first season in Mexico, which ended with a Liga MX champion’s medal. Jurgen Klinsmann has also shown a strong loyalty towards Michael Orozco, though he is seen as a utility defender more than a center back.
Still, Birnbaum will get a chance to prove that this is not representative of his ability. This weekend’s 3rd place game against the loser between Colombia and Chile is an opportunity for Klinsmann to rotate some less experienced players in. Klinsmann’s substitutions in this game – Birnbaum, Pulisic, and Darlington Nagbe – all fall in that category, and sending them into tonight’s game might be a signal of his intentions. Of course, there are no guarantees with Klinsmann, so we could well see Cameron and Brooks paired up once again.

Champions League: Real Madrid suffers shock defeat by Wolfsburg

(CNN)At the Camp Nou it was the real deal — on Wednesday it was in real trouble.
Real Madrid, the most successful club in the history of the competition, suffered a hugely embarrassing 2-0 defeat at German side Wolfsburg in the first leg of its Champions League quarterfinal tie.

Wolfsburg, which hadn’t won a game since qualifying for the last eight, shocked its illustrious opponent with a high-octane performance full of heart, desire and no shortage of quality.
On Saturday, Real’s players grouped together in the Camp Nou locker room to celebrate with what has now become the almost obligatory team photograph. Fresh from defeating arch rival Barcelona and ending the 39-match unbeaten streak which has seemingly catapulted the Catalan club towards another La Liga title.
But, in a quarterfinal clash in which it was huge favorite not only to progress but to do so with ease, it came unstuck at the first hurdle.
«I’m not happy with how the game went — especially the first half,» Real coach Zinedine Zidane told the tournament’s website.
«That’s football, that’s how difficult it is. That’s what happens when you don’t play with intensity from the start.
«We have to rest and think about the return leg because we still have the chance to change everything.»

The 10-time European champion was beaten by a Wolfsburg side which had never previously managed to qualify for the last eight of the competition.
First-half goals by Ricardo Rodriguez and Maximilian Arnold left Real with a difficult, although not impossible task, to qualify for the last four of the competition for the sixth consecutive season.
Zidane, who replaced Rafael Benitez in January, had led his side to six successive victories going into this game and yet he could only watch on from the sidelines as his plans fell apart.

Cristiano Ronaldo was kept quiet for the majority of the contest by the Wolfsburg defense, although the forward did have a goal ruled out for offside.

And yet there was little sign of what was to follow in the opening stages of this contest. It required just two minutes for Cristiano Ronaldo to have the ball in the Wolfsburg net, though his effort was ruled out for offside after a wonderful one-two between Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos had allowed the Portuguese forward to move in on goal.
If that was a let-off then what followed two minutes later was equally fortunate for the home side as Real was denied a penalty after Gareth Bale appeared to be tripped by a rather clumsy looking challenge from Luiz Gustavo. Referee Gianluca Rocchi waved away the appeals of the visiting players much to their consternation.
Wolfsburg, playing its first Champions League quarterfinal, overcame Belgian side Gent in the previous round largely due to a wonderful performance in the first leg by exciting young winger Julian Draxler.
Draxler again provided the catalyst for his side in a fine first-half performance. The highly-coveted 22-year-old danced his way to the byline and crossed for Andre Schurrle, who was tripped inside the penalty by Casemiro.
This time the referee did point to the spot and Rodriguez stepped forward to fire past Keylor Navas — the first goal the Costa Rican had conceded in 738 minutes of Champions League action.
Real appeared rattled and fell further behind just seven minutes later.
Draxler once again started the move, switching the play to Bruno Henriques, and when his cross managed to pierce a seemingly non-existent Madrid defense, Arnold took full advantage and slotted him his side’s second.
Real had never before conceded two goals in the first 25 minutes of a Champions League knockout game — and yet against a Wolfsburg side, eighth in its own domestic division, it was in danger of being torn apart.
Real’s evening grew increasingly miserable when France forward Benzema, who had earlier wasted a fine chance with a header, was forced to limp off after sustaining an injury earlier in the half.
Wolfsburg continued to impress after the interval and Schurrle should have added a third, taking a pass by Henrique in his stride before unleashing a fierce effort which flew over the bar.
Real threatened when Ronaldo forced Wolfsburg goalkeeper Diego Benaglio into a sharp save, but rarely did it look like finding a way back into the contest.
Last weekend Wolfsburg lost 3-0 to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga with a display which German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung felt was so poor that «it could amount to a new Volkswagen scandal.»
Now it has an opportunity to dream of a place in the last four. And why not? It will know that Real has been knocked out in the last eight Champions League knockout rounds in which it lost in the first leg.
«This must not be the end for us,» Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking said before this contest — it just might not be.

City in pole position

In the night’s other game, Paris Saint-Germain was held to a 2-2 draw by Manchester City after an entertaining game in the French capital.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who could move to the English Premier League next season when his PSG deal expires, could have given the home side the perfect start in the opening stages but his penalty was brilliantly saved by Joe Hart.
That miss was to prove costly as City, so inconsistent for much of the campaign, moved in front courtesy of Kevin De Bruyne’s fine strike.
But the visiting team, whose defense has proved its undoing on so many occasions, soon gifted the home side a route back into the contest.
Fernando, the Brazilian midfielder, received the ball on the edge of his own penalty area but his lack of composure allowed Ibrahimovic to close him down with the ball ricocheting off the Swede’s boot and into the net past a stunned Hart.
It was a dreadful error by Fernando and his side’s misery was compounded when Adrien Rabiot bundled home PSG’s second just short of the hour mark.
City, playing in the quarterfinals of the competition for the first time, rode its luck with Ibrahimovic’s header striking the crossbar as PSG poured forward.
But with 18 minutes remaining, Fernandinho took advantage of some woeful defending by Serge Aurier and sent a rather meek effort into the far corner.
«The quarterfinal continues to be open,» City manager Manuel Pellegrini told BT Sport.
«We must now play 90 minutes in Manchester but this is a good result for us. We made a couple of important mistakes for the first goal and the second goal was offside.
«In the first half, if we want to win, we cannot make those kind of mistakes. But we are trying to win the game from the first minute, it is the way we play.»

No volveremos a ver nada parecido.

Él no parece tener fin.

No te engaña nunca.
Te lo has ganado.

Surely, there’s no debate to be had any longer. Yes, comparing athletes from different eras is usually a fool’s errand. But an honest assessment of things, free of nostalgic or conventional bias, can really only result in one conclusion, can it not?

Lionel Messi is the best soccer player who ever lived.

[ FC Yahoo: Carli Lloyd finally gets recognition she deserves with Ballon d’Or ]

We knew this before he was awarded his fifth FIFA Ballon d’Or award as the world’s best player of the past year on Monday, in an award ceremony that was typical in its painful awkwardness. By completing his handful of golden balls, interrupted by a brazen two-year run by nemesis Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi broke the previous record also held by Lionel Messi.

At merely 28 years old and likely still in the midst of his prime, Messi has transcended his sport in a way nobody else ever had before. And long before his body of work is completed, it seems certain now that he’ll be remembered as the greatest of all time.

Let’s consider, after all, the competition.

For some reason, consensus was built over the last few decades that Pelé was the greatest of all time. He did indeed score a grotesque amount of goals over his career – he was credited with 1281, however dubiously, since that number apparently includes exhibition games. That’s more than double Messi’s tally. And he won three World Cups with Brazil in 1958, ’62 and ’70. Messi has yet to win anything major at the senior level with Argentina – although he led the Albiceleste to the 2014 World Cup and 2015 Copa America finals.

Messi hasn’t won a World Cup like Pele, but he’s played against the world’s best in Europe.

But there’s a gaping hole in Pelé’s resume: He never played his club soccer in Europe. His were different times, to be sure. The Brazilian league hadn’t yet been ravaged by the perpetual exodus to Europe by anyone with a modicum of talent. And the South American Copa Libertadores was likewise much more competitive than it is now. Pelé won the former six times and the latter twice.

However, back then just as now, the most competitive soccer was played in Europe. The Brazilian only really appeared at the very highest level once every four years, when the World Cup came around. The rest of the time, he wasn’t facing the world’s strongest teams every few weeks, the way Messi has. The little dribbler has won the Champions League four times and La Liga seven times – and counting. Pelé measured himself against the best every four years; Messi does it every weekend and often on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as well.

Pelé was a precocious prodigy who altered the way both attackers and defenders approached the game, opening their eyes to the possibilities. But Messi has not merely dominated in much the same way, but he also was the central cog in Barcelona’s machinery over the last decade, the lynchpin in a team that reinvented the sport entirely. Messi doesn’t just score; he creates. And in so doing he has remade the sport.

Next: Diego Maradona, who has as many things in common with Messi as the two are different. While both are short dribblers from Argentina, Maradona was drug-addled, hedonistic and unmanageable; Messi is the shy and consummate professional who has been with the same woman since he was 20 – whom he has known since they were just five.

Sure, Maradona – an Argentine folk hero; unlike Messi, who left for Barcelona at 13 – also won the World Cup. The thing is, Maradona’s prime was brief. After leaving Boca Juniors for Barcelona in 1982, his time in Catalonia was so tumultuous that the club had no choice but to sell him to Napoli two years later. That’s where he was at his best. But his seventh season was cut short by a 15-month cocaine suspension, ending his time in an adoring Naples and inducing his decline. Which is all to say that Messi has already been better, for longer, than Maradona was.

Our final contestant: Johan Cruyff, the visionary Dutchman who deployed the ground-breaking Total Football scheme devised by Rinus Michels. His stints at Barcelona as both a player and manager laid the groundwork for what the club is today – therefore directly enabling Messi. But if Cruyff scored a lot of goals, won many things and was perhaps the most influential player to ever bestride the soccer field, altering the course of his sport, he simply didn’t rise above it the way Messi did.

None of them measure up to the 5-foot-7 magician. And it’s been established for some time now that Ronaldo, while also surely one of the best ever, isn’t quite up to his level either.

At the very top, there is only Messi. He was the best in 2015, and he’s been better than every other man in any year before it.

After hearing his name called out yet again on Monday, the tiny virtuoso strode up to the stage at the merciful culmination of Monday’s Sepp Blatter-less FIFA festivities. He did so casually, as a matter of routine. He sported an unusually muted tuxedo – no bright red velour number this time, or polka dots. He didn’t lean heavily on the stage, as he once had. He smiled and gave a brief speech. And then he waved at his young son.

No surprise had registered on his face when the announcement was made. Not a single person in the room or anywhere else had been shocked. Because this argument has been settled already.

No, no tengo tiempo.

Barcelona dominates the 2015 World Best XI, the FC Yahoo version anyway

FC Yahoo

Dec 26, 2015

You will almost certainly disagree with it – absolutely disagree with it – but we have put together our first annual FC Yahoo World XI anyway. We tried to mix up our selections – truly, we did – but there was just no way around selecting five Barcelona players after their club won the treble an unprecedented second time in the 2014-15 season.

In fact, convincing arguments could have been made to include Barca’s Luis Suarez and Neymar as well, and perhaps even the underappreciated Ivan Rakitic. But then we didn’t allow ourselves to field more than three forwards, meaning we had to leave out some worthy names.

If we’d had our druthers, this team would probably have been set up in a 0-3-7. Because defending is for Communists and midfielding is for the indecisive. But we went with a 3-4-3 formation, in order to at least feign realism.

Happy Holidays. And thanks for reading this year.

And we look forward to your hate mail in the comments section.

GOALKEEPER

David De Gea, Manchester United

«But what about Manuel Neuer?!» we hear you screaming through your wireless networks and dial-up connections. Yes, there’s little doubt that the German is in very select company among the world’s best goalkeepers, but as Bayern Munich goalkeeper, he just doesn’t have all that much to do. And just as an elite plumber who never gets called out to an emergency can’t distinguish himself, Neuer doesn’t get to flash his immense ability much.

De Gea was the best goalkeeper who actually had to do some goalkeeping. He was the Premier League’s Goalkeeper of the Year and, for the second year running, Manchester United’s Player of the Year. He was shortlisted for the Premier League Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year. And after a late-summer move to Real Madrid collapsed, he was back to his points-saving self.

DEFENDERS

Gerard Pique, Barcelona

View gallery
.

For all of Barcelona’s success over the past seven seasons and counting, there are actually few players who have been there for all of it. Pique has. He had only just returned from Manchester United in the summer of 2008 when Barca went on its dynastic run. And in the intervening years, he became its rock in central defense.

Still just 28, Mr. Shakira is one of the more complete central defenders in an era starved of them. And he delivered more of that in 2015, to say nothing of his career-high seven goals in 2014-15.

Javier Mascherano, Barcelona

It’s seldom flashy or pretty, but there are few central defenders who are as effective and efficient as Mascherano. Perhaps it’s because he – like Pique – was a holding midfielder originally, until he was converted at Barca, giving him the spatial awareness to anticipate where the play will go. How else to explain the dominance of a 5-foot-9 defender?

And dominate he did. Thanks in large part to his one-on-one defending, Barcelona conceded just 21 league goals over 38 games, eight fewer than any other team.

Dani Alves, Barcelona

For much of last summer, it looked like the foraging Brazilian wing back would be leaving Catalonia after he, like Pique arrived in 2008. But he finally got the big new contract he wanted, in spite of having just turned 32. So he continued being a menace when he advanced up the flank and a quietly competent defender when he didn’t.

He doesn’t toy with opposing wingers the way he once did, but thanks to his unshakable performances in the back, Alves did make La Liga’s Team of the Season for the first time.

MIDFIELDERS

Eden Hazard, Chelsea

This is a tricky one, so bear with us. Hazard was the Premier League Player of the year and a big part of the reason Chelsea won the league. But in the second part of the year, as the new season began, his form totally collapsed.

Curiously, he appears to have been one of the drivers in the ouster of manager Jose Mourinho, even though the Belgian wizard thrived under the Portuguese. If Stamford Bridge were Westeros, they’d be referring to Hazard as «Kingslayer.» Still, we can’t overlook his scintillating form in the first half of the year. Or his six goals in eight games for Belgium, five of which came during Euro 2016 qualifiers.

Paul Pogba, Juventus

Any manager who spends a long time in charge of major clubs is bound to make some big mistakes in the transfer market. But perhaps none have loomed so large lately as Sir Alex Ferguson’s refusal to give Pogba the big contract he was demanding before he’d established himself in the first team. SAF’s fiscal caution was understandable, but after walking out of Old Trafford for free and signing with Juve, Pogba became one of Europe’s best central midfielders in pretty short order – at a time when United has struggled to properly staff those positions.

In 2015, Pogba led Juve to his third straight Serie A title and a dream run to the Champions League final. He was so good, in fact, that there was talk that United would try to bring him back for something close to a world record transfer fee.

Arturo Vidal, Juventus/Bayern Munich

Pogba’s midfield partner had a year for the ages. One of the game’s foremost box-to-box midfielders not only won a fourth Serie A title and got to the Champions League summit, but he also led Chile to its first ever Copa America title, on home soil no less. He was arrested for drunkenly crashing his Ferrari in the middle of that tournament – for which he was banned from driving for two years yet somehow not from soccer – but became a national hero nonetheless. He was the man of the match in the final against Argentina, which the Chileans won on penalties.

Then, last summer, he earned a massive transfer to Bayern, where he immediately made an impact as well.

Andres Iniesta, Barcelona

The Illusionist was never underappreciated at Barca, exactly. From 2010 through 2012, he was voted into the FIFA Ballon d’Or top four each year. And he scored a World Cup-winning goal once. Besides, without putting up the gaudy stats of some of his colleagues, he’s managed to win the Champions League four times, the World Cup once, the Euro twice, the Club World Cup thrice and La Liga seven times.

But with the Xavi era officially over at the Camp Nou, the onus is on Iniesta more than ever to create the chances that allow Lionel Messi, Suarez and Neymar to hog the headlines. And in the last year, he did that with as much aplomb as ever. To illustrate his dominance, fans of mortal enemies Real Madrid applauded him after masterminding a 4-0 away win at the Bernabeu, just the third recorded time a Catalan opponent got an ovation.

FORWARDS

Lionel Messi, Barcelona

Did Lionel Messi things. Won the treble. Bagged no fewer than 51 goals for club and country, along with 26 assists, for the calendar year, in spite of a knee injury that cost him two months. Took Argentina to the final of a major tournament for a second straight summer. You know the drill.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldoed extra hard. Collected 55 goals and 17 assists for Portugal and Real. Blah blah blah.

Robert Lewandowski, Bayern Munich

On Sept. 22, Lewie came on as a substitute while Bayern was behind to Wolfsburg and proceeded to score five times in 8 minutes and 59 seconds, setting four Guinness World Records. Before the week was out, he’d scored five more goals with a brace in the league and a hat trick in the Champions League.

It was hardly a fluke. Bobby Five Goals has slowly evolved into one of the best pure strikers in the game. And in 2015, he was transcendent. He won the Bundesliga, coming second in the league in goals, and led Poland to Euro 2016, a campaign during which he scored an unmatched 13 goals and was named the best player in qualifying.

– Alineaciones probables:

River Plate: Barovero; Mercado, Maidana, Balanta, Vangioni; Sánchez, Kranevitter, Ponzio; Pisculichi, Mora y Alario.

F.C. Barcelona: Bravo; Alves, Piqué, Mascherano, Alba; Rakitic, Busquets, Iniesta; Neymar, Messi y Luis Suárez.

Messi, Suarez and Neymar do not have any ego – Pique

YAHOO SPORT

c73f6ec5a0e8e31ad4085a24547f6575Gerard Pique has stressed Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar’s generosity towards each other has been key to their success at Barcelona.
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has hailed the selfless attitude of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar and believes the trio’s lack of ego is key to their success.

The Catalans’ attacking trident – nicknamed MSN – netted a stunning 122 goals in all competitions in 2014-15 and Pique is thoroughly impressed by their generosity towards each other.

«The key of these three is the relationship that they have,» Pique told the Telegraph.

«You can see that on the pitch. It’s magnificent. For example, when one is scoring a lot and the other is not scoring – Neymar, the other day, he gave the penalty to Suarez. When you see this kind of attitude, it means a lot.

«The only problem when you have players of this magnitude is the ego. Suarez was the main star in Liverpool, Leo before we had Suarez and Neymar; it was just him. And how they connect – they do not have any ego and this is the most important part.

«And they are different. Neymar is the best one-on-one. He is unstoppable. You have Leo Messi who is the most complete player in the world – he can attack, defend, he can head the ball even though he is small. And then you have Suarez and his first touch in the box is fantastic.

«It’s really easy to win titles when you have team-mates like Messi. Well, not really easy but easier than if you have another kind of player. To have Messi, Neymar and Suarez up-front, it is the best in the world.»

Neymar has scored 13 goals in 14 appearances so far this competition, Suarez has found the net 13 times in 17 games, while Messi has netted six in 10 games for a combined tally of 32 as they aim to surpass last season’s figure.

Pique targets leaving El Clasico in first place

OMNIS Sports

Yahoo – Nov 10, 2015
dba9aec7cf53df13cdfc15bb77acf92aAhead of El Clasico, Barcelona defender Gerard Pique says his top priority is leaving the Santiago Bernabeu with his side still top.

Gerard Pique has suggested leaving El Clasico with Barcelona still on top of La Liga would represent a positive outcome against Real Madrid.

The Camp Nou side are three points clear of their rivals at the top of the table going into the key Santiago Bernabeu clash after the international break, meaning a point will keep them in first place.

Pique feels Barca are going into the game at the perfect time of the season, with the club having recorded four straight league wins even as Lionel Messi sits out with a knee injury.

«We arrive for the Clasico at the best time of our season,» he is quoted as saying by AS.

«We will do as leaders and our hope is to get out of there in the same position.

«I do not know if there will be whistles at the Bernabeu, but it would be normal – we have never been well received.

«Anything can happen in the Clasico. There is a break for two weeks for internationals and we hope everyone comes back without any problems to get ready for Real Madrid.»

Barca are hoping Messi will be fit for the Clasico, although president Josep Maria Bartomeu has insisted the Argentina international will not be rushed back.
